The sprawling South by Southwest conference and festival, which brings together international artists, entrepreneurs, inventors and specialists within the music, tech, film and interactive/online fields each year in Austin, Texas, comes around again March 8 through March 17, 2019.
Oahu residents interested in taking part in SXSW are invited to a free informational session on Monday in Honolulu, hosted by Phil Tripp, SXSW Regional Pacific Development Manager for Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. The meet-up event, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Impact Hub, 1050 Queen St. in Kakaako, will focus on opportunities for local creative content producers, including musicians, filmmakers and programmers.
Past Hawaii participants at SXSW include musicians Jake Shimabukuro, The Green, Tavana and Mr. Carmack along with delegates from the Hawaii International Film Festival, Kamehameha Schools and Makaha Studios.
Hawaii-based musician Makana, an invited participant in 2018, took part in the music festival, performing at four venues. He informed his fans that he attended panels on podcasting, artificial intelligence in music and business, “big data,” music investment, streaming music and new revenue tracking technologies.
“We want to open SXSW more to the rich variety of talent from the islands — musical and digital and film/TV,” Tripp said. “These meetings will include both invited veterans and potential first-timers.”
Two more SXSW meet-and-greet events will be held in Kona, Hawaii, and Kahului, Maui, in late July. For more information, contact Phil Tripp at tripp@SXSW.com. Find out more about South by Southwest at SXSW.com.
