A 48-year-old man is believed to have been bitten by a shark while surfing offshore Hau Bush in Ewa Beach Saturday.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident around 8:54 a.m., treating the man for a wound to his lower left leg. The surfer was transported to an emergency room in serious condition. EMS said the man did not see a shark but that his injuries were consistent with a possible bite. Ocean Safety officers patrolled the area but did not close the beach. Warning signs were posted and will remain up until today, officials said. Federal lifeguards next door at White Plains beach also were notified.
There were two other shark-bite cases this year: On March 31, a standup paddler suffered severe injuries at Kukio Beach in North Kona, and on April 19, a body boarder was grabbed on his right thigh at Shipwreck Beach in Poipu, Kauai, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ shark incident website.
