Downed utility pole backs up Windward Oahu traffic

A Hawaiian Electric Co. crew has completed pole replacement work in Punaluu following a single-vehicle crash that caused a power outage to area customers.

Traffic is still being contraflowed on Kamehameha Highway near Puhuli Street as Hawaiian Telcom and Spectrum Cable complete repairs.

At about 11:45 p.m. Monday, a white Ford pickup truck was traveling on Kamehameha Highway when the vehicle knocked over a fire hydrant and struck a utility pole in proximity to Puhuli Street, according to HECO spokeswoman Shannon Tangonan.

The crash initially caused a power outage to approximately 800 customers. Power was restored to a majority of the customers by 2 a.m. after HECO switched them to another circuit. Crews restored power to the less than 30 remaining customers by 10:10 a.m. after they replaced the damaged pole.
