Former University of Hawaii football players Trayvon Henderson and Dejon Allen have reached agreements on free-agent deals with National Football League teams.
Henderson, who can play both safety positions, is joining the Cincinnati Bengals. Allen, an offensive lineman, is signing with the Chicago Bears.
Also, defensive end/linebacker Meffy Koloamatangi received an invitation to participate in the Oakland Raiders’ rookie camp next week.
Henderson will be reunited with Daronte’ Jones, a former UH defensive backs coach. Jones, who coaches the Bengals’ secondary, recruited Henderson to UH.
“It’s kind of crazy,” Henderson said. “He’s recruiting me to the NFL now.”
Henderson overcome a knee injury in 2015 to become one of the Rainbow Warriors’ top tacklers the past two seasons. He competed in the Senior Bowl in February. Henderson impressed at UH’s pro day, posting these numbers: 39 1/2-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-4 broad jump, 4.56 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
Henderson had several emotions during Saturday’s final four rounds of the NFL Draft. Some analysts projected Henderson to be picked as high as the fifth round.
“I was balancing between nervous and excitement,” Henderson said. “It’s like that feeling you get before the first game of the season. I couldn’t really sleep (Friday) night. I was anxious.”
After the draft, Henderson received several offers. He narrowed his choices to two, then picked the Bengals.
“I felt the Bengals would be the better fit for me as far as getting chances,” said Henderson, who is projected to compete at safety and on special teams. “Whatever they need, I’m there.”
Allen fielded several free-agent offers before deciding to make the Second City his first choice. Allen’s durability (he played in 49 of 50 games) and versatility enhanced his value. At UH’s pro day, Allen ran 40 yards in 4.98 seconds and benched 225 pounds 29 times. He was invited to the East-West Shrine Game.
At the Bears’ rookie camp, which begins May 10, Allen will compete at tackle, where he played the past two years, and right guard, where he was used his first two UH seasons.
“I’m going to do the best I can out there,” Allen said. “I’m proud to be a Bear. I can’t wait to get into some pads.”
Wideout Isaiah Bernard said he will be attending Canadian Football League tryouts with the B.C. Lions and the Ottawa Redblacks.
