Kumu Napua Greig savors sweet victory

The men of Ka Leo o Laka i ka Hikina o ka La, under the direction of kumu Kaleo Trinidad, won the kane kahiko with their performance to “Eia Hawai‘i” on Friday. The group also won the auana and overall categories for the men, and the halau came in second place in the overall competition.

The women of Halau Hi‘iakainamakalehua, under the direction of kumu Robert Ke‘ano Ka‘upu IV and Lono Padilla, won the wahine kahiko with their performance to “Nahi‘ena‘ena” on Friday.

The women of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina‘ala, under the direction of kumu Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin, performed to “No‘eno‘e Maika‘i Ke Aloha” during the hula kahiko competition. They placed second in the wahine overall category, while their halau took third place overall. The first-place winners of the festival were kumu hula Napua Greig’s Halau Na Lei Kaumaka o Uka.
