As large chunks of urban Honolulu undergo major transformation, there’s no better time to explore the “built environment” and discuss the future of design in Hawaii than during Architecture Month in April.
The American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter, is sponsoring a slew of architecture and design-related events themed “Community: Design Matters,” including Friday’s free Downtown Firm Crawl, when 13 architecture and design companies open their doors to the public to share their latest projects.

>> PechaKucha: Night of Design Presentations: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Architects, interior designers, educators, fine artists and writers offer fast-paced talks limited to 20 slides per presenter with only 20 seconds of commentary per slide. Cost: Free.
>> Downtown “Firm Crawl” Open Houses: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Cost: Free.
>> Architectural Photography Workshop: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. David Franzen will share techniques for effective and artful digital photography that conveys the spirit of a place. Cost: $75 AIA members, $105 nonmembers, $55 students.
>> Film Night: 5:30 p.m. April 27. A free screening of the 2017 Danish documentary “Big Time,” which follows Danish architect Bjarke Ingels as he embarks on his most ambitious project yet: Two World Trade Center.
>> Architectural Walking Tour: Kakaako, April 28, with start times available between 3 and 4:30 p.m. Cost: $15.
