An island institution since 1966, Zippy’s does a good job in balancing its everyman roster of island favorite dishes with new trends. Most recently, that has meant introducing a spicy vegetarian ramen for a new generation of sustainability-oriented diners.
The introduction coincided with the start of Lent, when many refrain from eating meat.
It ends up not being much of a sacrifice at all because the ramen’s so flavorful, starting with a rich, milky white, all-vegetable kotteri broth. Sun Noodle ramen, cabbage, bean sprouts and nori provide the heft.
Available at all locations from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, it’s $7.95 at takeout counters, and $9.15 in the restaurants.
The vegetarian ramen will be available through March 30 on a trial basis. If it proves popular, it may win a permanent spot on the menu, so try it now.
