Strong quake hits Papua New Guinea; no tsunami threat
A strong earthquake hit Papua New Guinea this morning but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The preliminary magnitude 6.7 quake hit 70 miles southwest of Porgera, Papua New Guinea at a depth of 14 miles at 4:13 a.m. Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin this morning.
No serious injuries were immediately reported.
