Hawaiian Electric Cos. is now accepting competitive bids to add 300 megawatts of renewable energy production on three islands, after receiving approval from the state Public Utilities Commission last week.
Proposals will be accepted through April 30. Hawaiian Electric expects to pick projects and negotiate contracts in September.
The initiative is aimed at increasing the utility company’s supply of renewable energy through 2022, which would allow developers to take advantage of federal tax credits while also lowering costs for customers.
Of the 300 megawatts, 220 would be for Oahu, 60 for Maui and 20 for Hawaii island. The utility said the offering represents the biggest opportunity to add renewable energy resources in Hawaii at one time. More information is at hawaiianelectric.com/competitivebidding.
