Hawaii freshman Elyse Lemay-Lavoie scored three goals and senior goalie Ymane Hage made a career-high 12 saves to lead the fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team to a 13-4 win over No. 14 San Diego State on Friday to open the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
Femke Aan, Chloe Barr and Irene Gonzalez each scored two goals for the Wahine (9-1) in their ninth straight win. UH next faces No. 4 UCLA today in the tournament’s winner’s bracket.
UH softball swept by Weber State
Weber State pounded out a run-rule victory over the University of Hawaii softball team in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader then stifled the Rainbow Wahine to complete the sweep in Los Angeles.
The Wildcats peppered UH pitching for 14 hits, including two home runs, in an 11-2 win in six innings to open the doubleheader at Loyola Marymount’s Smith Field. McKinley Brinkerhoff’s two-run double in the fourth inning chased UH starter Brittany Hitchcock (3-3), who gave up six runs on eight hits in 32⁄3 innings.
In the second game, WSU pitcher Kirtlyn Bohling held UH to three hits and struck out 10 in a 4-1 win. Dana Thomsen (2-3) gave up seven hits and struck out nine in UH’s fourth straight loss.
UH (5-6) closes its 12-game road trip with a rematch with Weber State (5-7) today.
Chaminade softball splits with UBC
The Chaminade softball team split a doubleheader against British Columbia on Friday afternoon at Kaiser High School’s field.
British Columbia (1-3) had 18 hits in the first game en route to a 14-6 win. Second baseman Frances Ramsay led thw Thunderbirds at the plate with a game-high three hits and four RBIs.
The Silverswords (3-4) responded with a 2-0 victory in the second game. Madelyn Stockslager tossed a shutout, giving up just two hits and two walks to go along with five strikeouts.
