A Kamehameha Schools faculty member charged with sexual assault has been released on bail.

James Maeda, 23, was charged Sunday with nine counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of third-degree sexual assault. He was released that day after posting $450,000 bail. Police said a girl reported Maeda sexually assaulted her.

Kamehameha Schools said a faculty member was placed on indefinite administrative leave after the school learned about an alleged “inappropriate relationship” between the faculty member and a student at the high school in Kapalama.

The school said it was cooperating with a Honolulu Police Department investigation.

Maeda is a faculty member in the high school’s performing arts department, according to the school’s website.

Kevin Cockett, Kamehameha Schools spokesman, said this weekend that keeping students safe is the school’s top priority.

“These incidents are not okay,” he said. “It is our responsibility to encourage students to come forward and embrace an environment of vigorous and active reporting and transparency.”
