Excessive speed and alcohol were factors in a crash Saturday in Waialua that led to the death of a 20-year-old man, police said.
At about 8:45 p.m. the driver, a 65-year-old man, hit the younger man on Kaukonahua Road near Keakula Street, police said.
The driver was Waianae-bound at the time, and the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.
Police said the pedestrian was taken to a hospital where he died.
It was Oahu’s fifth traffic fatality this year compared with one at this time last year.
Garage fire damages Aiea couple’s home
Firefighters are investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire at a senior couple’s home Sunday morning in Aiea.
Firefighters were dispatched at about 11:15 a.m. to a single-family home in the 98-1020 block of Kaonohi Street and found heavy smoke with flames coming from the garage, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Michael Jones.
About 34 firefighters responded and brought the fire under control by 11:36 a.m.
The residents, a married couple in their 80s, were checked by firefighters and declined transport to a hospital, firefighters said.
The American Red Cross responded to help the residents, and fire crews were still examining the burned structure Sunday afternoon. A damage estimate was under investigation.
Injured hiker above Waianae valley is rescued
Rescue crews came to the aid of an injured hiker above Waianae Valley on Sunday.
At 3:18 p.m. 12 firefighters, including the Air 1 helicopter company, responded to a report of a female hiker in her 30s who injured her ankle. Crews reached her just after 4 p.m. and airlifted her to a landing zone on Kaneaki Street, where she was transferred to an ambulance crew.
