A critical accident and a car fire closed the Windward-bound lanes of the Pali Highway and H-3 freeway Tuesday night.
Police were turning around Kailua-bound traffic at Waokanaka Drive after the city issued an alert at 8:42 p.m.
As traffic investigators responded, police decided to briefly close the Pali in both directions.
An accident between Waokanaka and the Pali tunnels left at least one motorist in critical condition, according to initial reports.
A woman at the scene was unresponsive, Hawaii News Now reported. No further details were available.
At about 9:30 p.m., police closed the Kaneohe-bound lanes of the H-3 due to a fire inside the Tetsuo Harano Tunnel. Cars headed in that direction were being turned around before the tunnel.
Honolulu fire crews were responding. There were no reports of injuries.
