A 94-year-old resident of Kaneohe’s Pohai Nani retirement community continues to recover from unspecified injuries she suffered Dec. 16 when she was “targeted” by a woman who assaulted the resident and made off with property, according to the South Dakota organization that runs Pohai Nani.
“We continue to value our residents’ safety and security and are fully cooperating with the police to help ensure this individual is held accountable for their actions,” Aaron Woods, spokesman for the Sioux Falls-based Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, wrote in an email to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “We have provided all relevant video surveillance footage to the police, which is critical to their investigation. The police have stated this appears to have been a targeted incident. Our resident is recovering from her injuries and we continue to have regular conversations with her and her family.”
Sgt. Chris Kim, who runs the Honolulu Police Department’s CrimeStoppers program, said police received “several tips” and conducted a photo lineup with the victim.
No arrests have been made.
Police said an unknown woman entered the victim’s Pohai Nani apartment and assaulted her before searching the apartment at about
6 p.m. The woman fled with the victim’s property.
The suspect was described as 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 6 inches tall, 140 to 160 pounds, with brown “ehu” colored hair, and was wearing a black top, blue jeans and black shoes.

“We have begun a complete review of the facility’s security systems and protocols, including strategically placed cameras, all access points and potentially implementing a Neighborhood Watch program,” Woods wrote in his email. “Pohai Nani is committed to working with local authorities and our residents in maintaining a safe and secure environment for everyone. We encourage all of our residents to maintain a heightened awareness of their surroundings and report anyone at the Pohai Nani location that appears out of place or unfamiliar. Our safety and security is a community initiative and we must look out for each other.”
