Dylan Collie was one of the few brights spots for the University of Hawaii football team on a rainy afternoon at Aloha Stadium that ended with a 30-20 loss to visiting BYU.
Collie caught six of seven passes thrown his way for 103 yards in the defeat that ended UH’s season at 3-9.
“Obviously to play against a lot of players I knew made it special,” said Collie, who redshirted at BYU in 2012 before transferring to Hawaii. “But the preparation was the same.”
Also, Collie’s brothers, Austin and Zac, played for the Cougars, as did their father, Scott.
Quarterback Dru Brown found Collie deep for a 44-yard completion in the first quarter, putting the ball at the BYU 34. But Hawaii, trailing 7-0, failed to get another first down and gave the ball back to the Cougars.
Collie, who just finished his junior season, said work on next season begins today.
“Absolutely,” he said. “We’ve got to get guys healthy, and take a minute to digest what just happened. Then it’s back to work.”
Series extended
Hawaii and BYU have agreed to meet again in Provo, Utah, in 2024, and in the islands again in 2025.
“It’s a great rivalry that goes back to 1930,” UH athletic director David Matlin said. “We are looking forward to continuing this tradition.”
The Cougars now lead the series 22-8. Hawaii’s last win was in 2001, when current coach Nick Rolovich threw a school-record eight touchdown passes in Hawaii’s 72-45 victory.
Daley remembered
A moment of silence was observed pregame for former UH player Brenden Daley.
The starting inside linebacker (2012-13) died Wednesday in California when he suffered a brain aneurysm. He was 26.
Leftover stuffing
BYU’s Handsome Tanielu was credited with just one stop, but the nose tackle from Waianae was a key component in stuffing the line of scrimmage and holding UH’s running game to 28 yards on 15 carries.
“It was crazy. I never thought I would end the year in Hawaii,” said Tanielu, who estimated between 30 and 40 friends and relatives attended the game. “It was worth it. Perfect way to finish. It was good. Wanted to finish strong and help my family be proud.”
Saint Juste catches Sims
Hawaii running back Diocemy Saint Juste was limited to 39 yards on 12 carries. But it was enough for the senior to finish his career by breaking the single-season school rushing record previously held by Travis Sims.
Saint Juste rushed for 1,510 yards this season, eclipsing the 1,498 of Sims in 1992. For his career, Saint Juste is second in UH annals with 3,102 yards on the ground to 3,451 by Gary Allen (1978-81).
