I was way too busy to get sick.
Never mind the body aches, fatigue and lingering sore throat. There was laundry to tackle, work deadlines to meet and kids to usher to and from extracurricular activities.
I got worse, but guess what? I was way too busy to see my doctor.
Never mind the fever, nausea, painful coughs and sleepless nights. There were meals to make, homework to check and a house to try to keep tidy.
My usual just-let-this-sickness-run-its-course strategy wasn’t going to work this time, though. After a weekend spent bedridden, miserable and useless, I finally saw my doctor.
As I type this column, I’m recovering from bronchitis.
Why do moms do this to ourselves over and over again? We refuse to slow down when our bodies are asking — begging — us to do so. We have to remind ourselves to make our health and well-being a priority. We are told this a zillion times and for good reason: We never listen, so we have to constantly be reminded.
A few months ago, after a handful of scary dizzy spells, I underwent a brain MRI and neck ultrasound to rule out anything serious. Between those appointments I also had my first mammogram. All three test results were normal and showed I’m fine. The dizziness may have been a result of dehydration, exhaustion or stress.
My younger self, circa 2005 B.C. (before children), would have likely ignored the dizziness and perhaps pushed off the mammogram for a more “convenient” time. But I’m at a different place in my life now. I have a family with three young daughters. I can’t take care of them if I don’t take care of myself first. I’m glad I agreed to the appointments, and even more glad for the peace of mind they provided.
During this past week of reflecting on what we are most thankful for, I expressed gratitude for good health. While I may not be fully recovered from my bronchitis at the moment, my medications (and my husband) have really helped. My energy is back — at least enough to tend to my family and enjoy the warm moments of the season.
As we head into the hectic holiday homestretch, remember to slow down and listen to your body. If you’re tired, rest. If you’re unwell, see your doctor.
I know it’s easier said than done. But you should never be too busy to take care of yourself.
Wishing everyone the most happy — and healthy — holidays.
