Pay tribute to women veterans tomorrow
For many of us, Veterans Day immediately brings to mind images of men in valiant military service. But, of course, the observance extends to women, too. A special tribute for women veterans is slated for Saturday at a sunset ceremony aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial in Pearl Harbor.
Retired Rear Adm. Alma Grocki — the first woman from Hawaii appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1981 — will, fittingly, present the opening address. Grocki retired from the Navy last year, after 35 years of service. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Shuttle service will be offered from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, starting at 3:30 p.m.
