Kids love opportunities to be creative. That makes this month’s New Wave Friday at Ward Village a great place for kids to be Friday as South Shore Market, a collection of 18 shops on the Diamond Head side of the Howard Hughes Corp. development, celebrates its first anniversary.
Art Explorium, a creative haven for kids on Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki, is pitching in for New Wave Friday at this event, bringing child-friendly materials “down the hill” to Kakaako. Kids who attend will be able to make and decorate their own tote bags and crowns.
Art Explorium seeks to encourage kids to think in eco-friendly ways by including in its art materials recycled items like bottle caps, scrap pieces of fabric, magazines, small boxes and ribbons. At its home location it offers a full slate of classes and open-studio time.
Kids and adults who are still young at heart are also invited to enjoy family-friendly activities such as face painting and balloon art. Henna “tattoos” will also be offered; expect the print to last several days before it starts to fade through exfoliation.

Celebrating South Shore Market’s first anniversary
>> When: 5-9 p.m. Friday
>> Where: South Shore Market, Ward Village

Music will be a big part of the evening, too. Lehua Kalima and Shawn “Shawn P” Pimental, both Hoku Award winners who are now working together, will appear, as will Simple Souls, the duo of Jenn “JRoQ” Wright and Zaysha Labrador, who entertain with two voices, acoustic guitar and percussion.
Topping the bill to complete a full evening of free entertainment is Hoku Award-winning trio Maunalua — Richard Gideon (ukulele), Kahi Kaonohi (electric bass) and the inimitable “Uncle Bobby” Moderow (guitar). All three guys sing. Moderow is famed for his Hawaiian falsetto vocal range as well as his talent as a slack-key guitarist.
Shoppers will also find plenty to do at the event. Many merchants in the area will have New Wave Friday specials and discounts awaiting discovery.
