San Diego State junior linebacker Ronley Lakalaka was among the last Aztecs to return to Aloha Stadium’s makai locker room after their 28-7 win over Hawaii on Saturday.
With more than 60 family members — including older brother and former UH running back Steven Lakalaka — in the crowd, he had a pretty good reason for being a bit tardy.
“It feels great,” Lakalaka said. “I’m just so happy they came to support me.”
Lakalaka, a Punahou graduate, was credited with three solo tackles and the Aztecs held UH to a season-low 195 yards in total offense to end a two-game skid. UH running back Diocemy Saint Juste entered the game averaging 156.3 yards per game, but managed just 40 yards on 17 carries on Saturday.
“The last two weeks, we haven’t been aggressive and attacking,” Lakalaka said. “The key for us was to attack any hole that we see (and) go and fill it.”
SDSU held UH to its lowest yardage total last season (215) and the Warriors finished under 200 for the first time since a 178-yard performance against Air Force on Oct. 31, 2015.
SDSU senior defensive end Dakota Turner, a Mililani graduate, finished with three stops, two solo. Andrew Aleki, a freshman linebacker from Kamehameha, was also credited with two tackles in SDSU’s sixth straight win over UH.
“I’m proud of the local guys,” Lakalaka said. “We’re not only fighting for our team but our families here in Hawaii.”
Choi with a pick
UH defensive lineman Zeno Choi snagged his first career interception in the fourth quarter, ending SDSU quarterback Christian Chapman’s streak of attempts without a pick at 167.
Choi dropped into coverage on an attempted screen pass, directly into the path of Chapman’s throw. Chapman entered the game with the nation’s second-longest run without an interception.
Another slow UH start
The Rainbow Warriors were shut out in the first quarter for the fifth time in the past six games. UH mustered a yard per minute in the period with 15 yards in nine plays, going three-and-out on its first three possessions.
UH picked up its initial first down 17:15 into the game, trailing 14-0 at that point.
The Warriors offense finished 2-for-14 on third downs, and faced third-and-7 or longer on 10 occasions, converting one of those situations.
Bernard back in books
Nearly two years after his last catch, UH senior Isaiah Bernard ran down a 47-yard pass from Dru Brown in the second quarter for his first reception of the season and the Warriors’ longest gain of the night.
Bernard caught 21 passes in 2015, then redshirted last season. His catch on Saturday was his first since Nov. 7, 2015 against UNLV.
