The practical, the whimsical and the traditional are all on display at the Hawai‘i Craftsmen Statewide Juried Exhibition, open through Nov. 10 at the Honolulu Museum of Art School.
Oh, and the beautiful as well.
For this 50th annual show, the Hawai‘i Craftsmen organization took the unusual step of going international in search of a juror, selecting the renowned ceramicist Magdalene Odundo from the United Kingdom. From more than 350 entries, Odundo selected 103 items covering a range of styles and materials, including turned and carved wood, fabrics and fibers, ceramics and glass.
The most amusing entry is Robert Duffer’s Rube Goldbergian contraption, “Release System.” Using a lathe, Duffer created the system of pulleys, weights and levers that, with the help of an electric motor, lifts and lowers an upside-down glass to trap and release water vapor. It’s interactive – you can flick a few switches to light it up and start the motor and a humidifier that generates the water vapor.

“I tend to like certain styles of things, like steampunk, so I tried to think of a motion of something going up and down, with steam coming out of it,” said Duffer, a Mililani resident. “When I was a kid, I loved animation, cartoons and stuff like that, and I’ve always enjoyed seeing things move.”
On the traditional side, Page Chang of Waimanalo received the Award of Excellence for her “He‘e Malo,” a 12-foot-long malo made from kapa adorned with the image of an octopus.
“I grow the trees and I pound the bark and I process the dyes,” she said. “It’s not only 100 percent natural, it’s all native materials.”
Chang made her own tools to pound bark from the wauke tree into kapa, taking three days of hammering.
“You keep a rhythm, and as you work, it’s very meditative,” she said.
