Voting is now underway for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries’ first Hawaiian monk seal photo contest.

NOAA Fisheries fielded so many submissions after launching the contest in July that its panel of judges on Monday could only narrow the first round of finalists down to 74.

“We had so many fantastic submissions in some categories that we’ve created a few additional categories to make voting easier,” NOAA Fisheries said on Facebook.

Two categories of photos will be posted daily for online voting this week. On Monday, the categories were “Moms & Pups” and “Coexistence with Hawaii’s Native Seal.” On Tuesday, the categories were “Strike a Pose” and “Seal-Seal Interactions.”

Today, NOAA Fisheries added “Threats to Survival” and “Monk Seals in Their Settings.”

To participate, like the NOAA Fisheries’ Pacific Islands Facebook Page. Participants can vote for as many photos as they want in the Year of the Monk Seal Photo Contest Facebook albums by liking them and are encouraged to share them with #YOMS2017. The photos with the top number of likes will be featured in NOAA’s 2018 calendar.

When NOAA Fisheries launched the contest, it asked for entries of original, unpublished work and responsible photography taken ethically and from within 50 feet away. Judging is based on composition, general aesthetic, relevance to category and conservation message embodied.

Participants can vote for their favorite photo submissions until 6 p.m. Oct. 27. Category winners will be announced on Oct. 30. More information is available via the NOAA website.
