Retired University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji will be one of three people honored at the sixth annual “Journeys to Wellness” seminar Oct. 14 at the Community Church of Honolulu.
Registration starts at 8 a.m. for workshops held throughout the day until 3 p.m. at the church, 2345 Nuuanu Ave.
Dr. John Houk, one of the award winners, will address “Aging: A Doctor’s Perspective” as the keynote speaker. Topics include the secrets of aging well, caring for the aged and end-of-life preparations.
At 10:15 a.m. the Puaka‘ana o ka La (Rise Up!) Awards will be presented to Shoji, Nancy Aleck and Houk.
Recently retired after coaching the Rainbow Wahine for 42 years, Shoji had the second-highest number of victories in women’s college volleyball and guided his teams to four national championships and nine NCAA finals.
He is in the American Volleyball Coaches Association and Hawaii Sports halls of fame. He was named coach of the NCAA 25th Anniversary team and was part of USA Volleyball’s 2002 list of all-time great coaches.
Aleck has worked with the state Department of Education, American Friends Service Committee and Salvation Army. As the retired executive director of Hawaii’s People Fund for 13 years, she supported grass-roots organizations promoting progressive social change.
Houk has been a primary care physician for 37 years in Hawaii, serves as medical director of Arcadia and Craigside retirement residences, and teaches at the UH John A. Burns School of Medicine. In 2012 he was recognized as the Hawaii Medical Association Physician of the Year.

>> “Building the Beloved Community,” Puanani Burgess, noted consultant, cultural translator, lecturer and poet.
>> “Sacred Paths of Energy Healing,” Ruey Ryburn.
>> “Writing and the Coming Together of Body, Mind & Spirit,” Jimmy Toyama.
>> “Purification, Art, Beauty and Nutrition,” Norman Oshiro and MOA (Mokichi Okada Association) Hawaii staff.
>> “Secrets on Reclaiming Your Health,” Leslie Sharp.
>> “Reiki: Healing Through Balance,” led by Rosemary and Alan Goto.
During the workshops, free massage treatments will be offered by Chad Imano in front of the administration office. Lunch will be catered by Sarah Loui.
