An Oahu grand jury issued a second-degree murder indictment against an 18-year-old man in a deadly shooting in Waikiki.
Jordan A. Smith was indicted Wednesday in the death of 22-year-old Maleko Remlinger of Kaneohe. Prosecutors also charged him with one count of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder and four firearm offenses.
Bail is set at $1 million.
Shortly before he was indicted, Smith appeared before Judge Randal Shintani at his arraignment at Honolulu District Court Wednesday morning, where deputy public defender Shem Kim pleaded not guilty to the charges on Smith’s behalf.
The shooting occurred early Saturday when Smith allegedly fatally shot Remlinger and injured two other men standing in a crowd outside Club Alley Cat.
Police said witnesses saw a male suspect later identified as Smith carrying a rifle who walked to the front of the establishment and shot about “seven to ten rounds into the crowd,” according to a court document.
Police said Remlinger sustained three gunshot wounds, to the chest, left shoulder and left hip. Emergency Medical Services transported him to The Queen’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 6:50 a.m.
The other men were transported to the hospital in serious condition, one with a gunshot wound to his arm and the other with a wound to his buttocks.
Officers of the Honolulu Police Department’s Specialized Services Division arrested Smith Sunday at a McCully apartment.
Smith was on supervised release for misdemeanor assault at the time of the shooting. He was charged Friday with third-degree assault in connection with a Sept. 14 incident. According to court records, Judge Paula Devens at Honolulu District Court placed Smith on supervised release and he was scheduled to appear in court in November.
