A pair of newlyweds from New Jersey were injured Friday afternoon after falling about 25 feet from a cliff ledge overlooking Red Sand Beach in Hana.
According to a Maui Fire Department report, a woman, 26, lost her footing near the edge. Her husband, 29, reached out for her and both ended up falling on the land below.
Witnesses assisted the couple to the nearby beach until fire rescue personnel arrived. Both were airlifted to a landing zone established at Hana Ball Park and transferred to a waiting medevac helicopter.
The man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition with injuries to his head and legs. His wife was also transported to the hospital in stable condition with back injuries.
Fire closes Wailuku gym
A fire damaged bleachers on Friday at Wailuku Gymnasium and forced the closure of the gym until further notice.
The fire was reported at 7:44 a.m. after area residents reported seeing smoke coming from the roof.
Fire crews arrived at the scene to find a trash can on fire in the gym. The fire was extinguished at 8:03 a.m., and damage was estimated at $1,500.
A preliminary investigation shows the fire was intentionally set, Maui County said in an emailed statement. Maui police are investigating.
