PASADENA, CALIF. >> It has been a tense week for Hawaii running back Diocemy Saint Juste and cornerback Rojesterman Farris II, both of whom have family in Florida.
“It’s very scary, especially when it’s family and they can’t do much about it,” UH coach Nick Rolovich said of Hurricane Irma. “I checked with (Saint Juste and Farris) every day the last three days. It’s scary especially being this far away from home.”
Both players’ families appear to be safe.
“There are a lot bigger things than football,” Rolovich said. “Family is one of them.”
Ursua back in action
Slotback John Ursua was back in the lineup on Saturday after missing the previous game because of an injury.
“It feels good to be back this week,” Ursua said. “Last week was a minor setback.”
In the season opener against Massachusetts, Ursua had 12 receptions for 272 yards. But he suffered an injury in that game, then aggravated it two days before the Sept. 2 meeting vs. Western Carolina.
Against UCLA, Ursua had a team-high 10 catches for 79 yards.
“Luckily, we’ve got a bye this week,” he said. “I’ll do everything I can to get (fully) healthy for conference.”
The Warriors open Mountain West play against Wyoming on Sept. 23 in Laramie, Wyo.
QB McDonald produces
After a so-so performance in his first NCAA game last week, second-year freshman quarterback Cole McDonald was more productive — and confident — against UCLA.
On a specially designed play, McDonald ran for 9 yards in UH’s opening drive. He returned in the fourth quarter, racing 58 yards on a read-option keeper.
“I have to give credit to the line and (wideout) Keelan (Ewaliko), who (blocked) on the edge,” McDonald said.
McDonald capped that drive with an 8-yard run for his first career touchdown.
“I’m not too overjoyed about it,” McDonald said. “It’s what’s expected of me. It’s not one score that wins a game, it’s multiple (touchdowns).
Fake punt falls short
After two weeks of waiting, special teams coordinator Mayur Chaudhari gave the green light for punter Stan Gaudion to take off on a fake, The Warriors had faced a fourth-and-22 on their 29.
“I saw the look the play before when they called a penalty on us,” Chaudhari said. “I wanted to get us a chance to flip the field and get the offense back on the field.”
Gaudion took the long snap, then sprinted left. He was stopped after a 19-yard gain, 3 yards short of the first-down marker.
“We’ve been setting it up for a few weeks,” Gaudion said. “It sucks we didn’t get it.”
