Moped rider dies after being struck by vehicle

A 56-year-old Honolulu man died after another vehicle struck him while he was riding his moped, police said.

The man was traveling west at approximately 11:38 p.m. on Saturday when he was struck near the intersection of Ward Avenue and Beretania Street by a vehicle operated by a 23-year-old female. The man was ejected from the moped.

At 12:06 a.m. on Sunday he was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. He later died at the hospital.

Police said it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the collision.

This is the 31 traffic fatality in 2017 compared to 40 at the same time in 2016.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
