Jhoven Sausal’s 75-yard game-opening kickoff return touchdown set the tone for an extremely lopsided result as host Campbell routed Kaiser 71-0 on Friday.
The Sabers scored 34 in the first quarter, went up 55 at halftime and rolled to their highest point total in a recorded game, while the Cougars gave up their most in one.
Kaiser suited up only 22 after forfeiting its first two OIA Blue dates against Mililani and Radford. The Cougars lost at least a couple of them to injury against the Sabers.
“We had 22 on the roster, and some new kids who were learning the game,” Kaiser coach Arnold Martinez said. “But the expectation was that those 22 would play for each other, and play hard. Not give up, and that’s what they did. I told them many times before the game and even at halftime, there’s not a team with more heart in the OIA than this small group of guys right here.”
Campbell intercepted quarterback Casey Nguyen four times and ran back two of them for scores. The Sabers inserted their backups by halftime but still scored on the ground against the exhausted Cougars.
Joshua Salvido rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown.
