Hawaii Red Cross sending 19 volunteers to Harvey-ravaged areas
A total of 19 Hawaii Red Cross volunteers are now expected to head to Texas and Louisiana to assist victims of Hurricane Harvey as rain continues to fall, officials said today.
The American Red Cross of Hawaii said eight volunteers are from Oahu, six from the Big Island, four from Maui, and one from Molokai.
The volunteers will assist with relief efforts ranging from damage assessment to bulk distribution, sheltering, community partnership and disaster mental health, Red Cross officials said. More Hawaii volunteers are on standby for deployment.
Texas officials estimated more than 30,000 people could be forced from their homes, with more than 725,000 under mandatory evacuation orders and more than a million facing voluntary evacuation orders, according to the Red Cross. Thousands are also being evacuated in Louisiana as Harvey, now a tropical depression, moves inland for the second time.
