A mid-rise hotel slated to open on the outskirts of downtown Kapolei in late October can expect some close competition in a couple of years.
Two Utah companies developing a 180-room Embassy Suites by Hilton in Oahu’s “Second City” plan to start construction within a few hundred feet on a 183-room Residence Inn by Marriott later this year.
The second hotel was announced Wednesday by Colliers International, a commercial property brokerage firm that represents the seller of both hotel development sites, an affiliate of Kisco Senior Living.
Colliers said a partnership between Western States Lodging and Thackeray Garn Co., both of Utah, and Texas-based American National Insurance Co. bought 3.9 acres for the Residence Inn. A purchase price was not disclosed.
Developing the four-story hotel is estimated to cost more than $60 million.
Western States and Thackeray Garn are also the developers of the seven-story Embassy Suites set to open later this year.
The two hotels largely cater to business travelers and families. The Embassy Suites is a limited-service hotel with separate living and sleeping areas. The Residence Inn, which also features full kitchens, is an extended-stay hotel where guests often stay more than five days.
