Man seriously injured after jumping into Maui swimming hole

A 28-year-old Wailuku man was transported to a hospital after he suffered multiple injuries when he landed on some rocks at a freshwater swimming hole in Keanae on Maui.

The Maui Fire Department said the man, who lives in a hostel, was swimming with a group of friends at a freshwater pond off of Hana Highway at the time of the accident.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday, the swimmer jumped from a ledge into the pond about 15 feet below when he landed on some rocks in shallow water.

The swimmer sustained multiple injuries to his upper and lower extremities. Firefighters arrived and found the man sitting on the water’s edge of the pond.

Firefighters carried him to the highway on a stretcher where responding paramedics transported him to Keanae Peninsula. He was then flown by helicopter to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition.
