HILO >> A Hawaii Island woman has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder in the starving death of her 9-year-old granddaughter.
A Nov. 13 trial date was set for 59-year-old Henrietta Stone at her arraignment Tuesday, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.
Stone is charged along with her daughter, the child’s mother, Tiffany Stone, 33, and the father, Kevin Lehano, 50.
All three remained in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Henrietta Stone was the child’s legal guardian.
Authorities temporarily took the girl and her brother from Lehano and Tiffany Stone in February 2007, according to a court affidavit.
Years later, police found the girl to be severely malnourished in June 2016. She died at a hospital hours after authorities made contact.
At the arraignment Tuesday, the state Department of Education stated Henrietta Stone removed her granddaughter from a Hilo elementary school for home-schooling eight months prior to the child’s death.
