A strong earthquake near the Aleutian Islands did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami that would threaten Hawaii, officials said this afternoon.

The magnitude 7.7 quake struck at about 1:34 p.m. Hawaii time and was centered 210 miles west-northwest of Attu in Alaska’s Aleutian islands, at a depth of about 7 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The magnitude of the quake was initially reported as 7.4, but the USGS later revised it upward.
