Hawaii is experiencing another round of king tides, the highest tides of the year, which usually occur around the winter and summer solstices.
When the sun and new moon align, their gravitational forces combine to generate higher-than-normal king tides, according to scientists with the University of Hawaii Sea Level Center. In addition, higher sea levels in the Central Pacific due to climate change and other factors are creating even larger king tides this year, they said. The larger tides will build through Saturday and might cause more flooding.
