The seven other traditional replica vessels that joined the Hokule‘a at Magic Island on Saturday were: The Namahoe (Kauai), the Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani (Maui), the Makali‘i (Hawaii island), the Hawai‘iloa (Oahu), the Okeanos Marshall Islands (New Zealand), the Fa‘afaite (Tahiti) and the Hikianalia (Oahu).
A global media event
The Hokule‘a’s homecoming was covered by an international contingent of news media outlets.
NBC Nightly News, the Boston Globe, Smithsonian Magazine, Alaska Beyond Magazine and California-based sailing magazine Latitude 38 were among the U.S. press covering the event.
Some international coverage also was planned by BBC Radio, Globo TV Brazil, Tahiti Nui Television and Der Spiegel.
