‘Doggie treasure hunt’ suports Windward park effort
Efforts to establish an off-leash dog park in Windward Oahu are gaining momentum. On May 10 the Honolulu City Council adopted a resolution supporting the project and requesting the city study the feasibility of building the park at one of two possible sites: a city-owned parcel at Kalaheo Hillside, or a site next to Bayview Golf Course.
To further advance the effort, the Windward Dog Park Hui is holding a “doggie treasure hunt” Saturday at Nalowinds Kennels in Waimanalo.
“It’s not just for the dogs,” said Janine Tully, president of the nonprofit Windward Dog Park Hui, of the proposed park. “It’s a need for our community to have green space. As our communities get bigger, we’re losing that green space in our urban areas. For me, this is also going to benefit the community as a place to gather and talk story, with your dogs or without. So we’re very excited.”
Tully cited a study by the Hawaiian Humane Society that found nearly half of Oahu households have a pet dog. Of the five off-leash dog parks on Oahu, none are on the Windward side. So far, the hui’s petition in support of the dog park has gathered close to 2,000 signatures, she said.
The fundraising event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Nalowinds Kennels, 41-502 Flamingo St. Dogs will have a chance to sniff out hidden, treat-filled eggs, and each animal will go home with a goody bag.
Cost is $10 for one dog; add $5 for each additional animal. Email windwarddogpark@gmail.com or visit facebook.com/WindwardDogParks for more information.
