Big Island police charge man in fatal hit-and-run
A 26-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 31-year-old man over the weekend in Keeau, Hawaii island police said.
Keempe Drequito, of Keeau, was charged Tuesday night with manslaughter, negligent homicide, accident involving death or serious injury, and reckless driving. His bail was set at $286,000.
Police said Travis Serquina, also of Keaau, died Sunday night after a 2003 Mazda sedan rear-ended a Toyota pickup that Serquina was driving on Highway 130 near Shower Drive.
When police and firefighters arrived, they found the truck engulfed in flames. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, they discovered Serquina’s burned body partially outside the vehicle.
Police said Serquina was identified by his fingerprints.
Drequito ran away after the crash. Police located him shortly afterwards and arrested him.
