Fresno State sophomore right-hander Kamalani Dung was named the Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week on Tuesday.
Dung, a 2015 Kamehameha alumna, went 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA last week and notched her seventh shutout of the season to lead the conference.
Dung started and won all three games of the series against UNLV to earn her first career MWC weekly award.
She threw all 23 innings of the series and allowed just four extra-base hits and three walks while striking out 12.
Dung held the Rebels to a .216 batting average, a .250 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .284.
“Kama showed she is one of the top pitchers in the league,” Fresno State coach Linda Garza said in a press release. “She stepped up when her team needed her and stuck to the process, pitch by pitch, for 23 innings. Kama has grown throughout the season and her mental game is getting better every week.”
In Friday’s 6-4 win, Dung went nine innings for the second time this season and struck out seven. Saturday, she allowed two hits and a walk in a 3-0 shutout and her 23rd complete game of the season in Sunday’s 4-3 victory gave her a MWC-leading 20 wins this season.
“I’m proud of her growth and excited for our future,” Garza said. “Kama wants the ball and wants it in tough situations. She’s a true competitor and embraces all opportunities to lead this team on the mound.”
Frost named rookie of the week
Johnson and Wales utility player Kristin Frost was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference rookie of the week on Monday.
Frost, a 2016 Pearl City graduate, hit .700 and posted a .786 on-base percentage to lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 record.
She finished 5-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday with four RBIs and earned the save in Thursday’s 8-3 victory over Eastern Connecticut State, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three shutout innings of relief.
Frost is hitting .411 in 37 games this year with 10 doubles, three triples, four homers and 38 RBIs.
Akiu makes U.S. Collegiate National Team
Texas Tech’s Reyn Akiu, a 2015 Kamehameha alumna, will spend the summer training and competing with the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Minneapolis.
The CNT-Minneapolis team, which is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team, will train from June 22 to 26 at the University of Minnesota.
A total of 36 members will train with the team and the players will then be assigned to three 12-member teams to compete in a round-robin format at Minneapolis Convention Center from June 27 to 30.
The matches are held in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.
Akiu, who averaged 4.91 digs per set last season, was named second-team All-Big 12.
She will be joined on the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Minneapolis by Hawaii’s McKenna Granato, a 2015 Punahou alumna.

>> Tiana Rosario, Campbell ’13: The Lewis & Clark senior was named to the All-Northwest Conference second team on Friday. Rosario, earned her first all-conference nod after hitting .313 with eight RBIs this season. For the season, Rosario hit .329 with a double, five walks and 14 runs scored.
>> Haley Kodama, Kamehameha ’14: The Pacific (Ore.) junior was named honorable-mention All-NWC after leading the league with four triples. Kodama hit .274 with a homer, seven doubles and 14 RBIs and led the league in assists with 83.
>> Tiana Creekmur, St. Francis ’16: The Willamette (Ore.) freshman catcher earned honorable-mention All-NWC honors after hitting .246 with two doubles, two homers and 15 RBIs this season.
>> Jacy Watanabe, ‘Iolani ’14: The Cal Lutheran center fielder finished 2-for-7 with two runs scored and a stolen base in a doubleheader split with Pomona-Pitzer to end the season on Saturday.

>> Alyssa Tobita, Punahou ’14: The Oregon junior clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 flight to help the Ducks beat UCLA for the first time in school history to advance to the semifinals of the Pac-12 Championships. Tobita lost in three sets at No. 1 singles after winning the first set 6-1 against the No. 3-ranked player in the country. Tobita lost at No. 2 doubles in a 4-0 loss to Stanford in the Ducks’ first-ever semifinal match and her match at No. 1 singles stopped after two sets with it tied 1-1 against the No. 41-ranked player in the country.
>> Kristen Poei,‘Iolani ’13: The Cal State Northridge senior posted victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles in a 4-3 loss to Cal State Fullerton in the Big West quarterfinals on Friday. Poei ends her career with a school-record 50 doubles victories.

>> Lauren Boyer, Punahou ’13: The UC San Diego senior led the Tritons with a game-high six goals in a 15-4 win over Sonoma State to claim the Western Water Polo Association championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament on Sunday. Boyer netted her 13th hat trick of the season for the Tritons and was named to the all-tournament team. UCSD will host Wagner in an opening-round game in the NCAA Championships on Saturday.
