Trevor Noah’s got Hawaii on his radar

Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” will make his Hawaii debut next month, with shows on Maui and Oahu.

Comedian Trevor Noah’s May 25-26 performances will be the Hawaii debut for the host of “The Daily Show” host, but he’s already dabbed his toes in the water.

A funny Hawaii moment on the award-winning cable show came at the expense of President Donald Trump and his quest for Barack Obama’s birth certificate. There was also a good-humored “shaka brah” poke at KITV’s aloha-attired news crew.

Noah ran a clip from the news about federal Judge Derrick Watson’s ruling against Trump’s travel ban. The South Africa-born entertainer imagined Watson producing the birth certificate — well, sort of. Google it to get the joke.

Ensure ADUs for local renters, not tourists

The city clearly has hopes for the model home erected on the state Capitol lawn: that it will help to sell the idea of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). These are the small add-on units the city hopes homeowners will build to expand Oahu’s lagging inventory of affordable rentals.

As an inducement, fees and permitting delays have been eased. Let’s hope, though, that the city doesn’t ease its regulations against illegal vacation rentals. Given recent history, it’s easy to see how some will try to recoup more costs by tapping tourists instead of isle renters.
