As an entrepreneur, author and floral designer, Tamara Rigney is always getting her hands dirty — literally. Rigney runs Paiko, a plant and flower shop in Kakaako. She recently published the book “‘Ohi: How to Gather and Arrange Hawaii’s Flora.”
“Since I work with plants, mud, moss and water, I don’t buy really expensive clothes because they’ll probably get dirty,” she said. “I try to keep it minimal with a few pieces from local designers or light jewelry.”
During her free time, Rigney is an avid surfer who is often spotted in the lineup off Diamond Head.

Describe your style
“Simple, functional. I’m pretty OK with denim on denim.”
For comfort
“Jeans shorts, a tank and slippers. (Laughs) Can you tell I grew up here?”
Outfit for outdoors
“I tend to wear long denim, comfortable sneakers and a flannel jacket. I’ve started wearing more protective layers since a few run-ins with mosquito swarms and poisonous saps.”
Must-have accessory
“Saboten Japanese clippers are the best. They are a must-have in my line of work.”
Favorite jewelry piece
“I’m really into Alchemilla from Oakland. Her designs are striking, and all of the pieces are handmade from vintage metals and gems. I loved it so much, I brought it into the Paiko shop.”
Surf attire
“I try to be good about staying out of the sun because I’ve got that haole skin, but I still love to surf. To keep me warm in my early morning or late afternoon sessions, I love my O’Neill Bahia spring suit (wet suit). It’s super cute and gives me sun protection.”
Buying local
“I try to support local designers whenever I can. Roberta Oaks is always a favorite, and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of her new denim jumpsuits!“
Beauty routine
“I learned about micellar cleansing water from French friends while living in San Francisco last year, and now I can’t live without it. I use the Garnier brand of moisturizer after cleansing with Cetaphil. The cleanser works wonders at taking off sunscreen and makeup and doesn’t dry out my skin.”
