Famed foods from neighbor islands, such as kulolo from Kauai, fish and bread from Molokai and Kona coffee from Hawaii island, will be offered at booths run by families from those islands, said Lynn Akeo, chairwoman of this year’s event.
“Students and their families are working to put on the event,” which Akeo said is attended by as many as 15,000 people.
Each year’s sophomore class is tasked with hosting the hoolaulea. This year is special for Akeo: In addition to being an alumna with fond memories of attending and working the event as she was growing up, her son is a sophomore.
“This is a great honor and responsibility, for us to be in this position to host our community and put on a successful hoolaulea,” she said. “We always say that we feel grateful for Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s generosity to the school, and by giving back, we could never out-give her,” Akeo said.
With the exception of Kamehameha Schools’ famous brownies, food is prepared by parents of students. Every grade level has a booth responsibility.
In addition to selling the brownies, sixth-graders also will be selling handmade crafts and merchandise in the country store.
Food items will range in price from 50 cents for a malasada to $12 for a Korean plate, or for a Hawaiian plate with kalua pig, squid luau, chicken long rice, lomi salmon, haupia and pineapple.
Hoolaulea-goers also can learn how to make paiai, kapa and lauhala from cultural practitioners.
The annual fundraising celebration will kick off with a performance by the Warrior Marching Band and Color Guard. There will be additional performances by the Hawaiian Ensemble, the middle school’s Papa Oli me Hula, the elementary school’s Children’s Chorus, the Concert Glee group and the Kamehameha Dance Company.
Professional entertainment will include Waipuna, Keauhou, Pomaika‘i Lyman and Josh Tatofi, Makena and Peni Dean.
Parking is available on the Kapalama campus, the elementary school and at the Kamehameha Schools bus terminal, where shuttle service will begin at 7 a.m. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets and stay for the day.
