The Honolulu Chorale will give its Joe McAlister Award to John Renke, former director of music at the Cathedral of St. Andrew.
The award will be presented at “Jubilate!” — the chorale’s annual music event and fundraiser — at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at Honolulu Country Club. The nonprofit chorale is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Renke resigned in October amid plans by the cathedral to change the direction of its musical program.
In an announcement of a new position he is accepting next month in California, Renke said he was grateful for the chance to have created “a vibrant Anglican Cathedral style of music and worship, and collaborating with many of Hawaii’s finest performing organizations. I am most especially grateful to the devoted choristers of the Hawaiian Choir and Cathedral Choir who, week after week, brought such transcendent beauty to the cathedral’s worship.”
Renke will become a pastoral associate for divine worship for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, the mother church for over half a million Roman Catholics in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
The Honolulu Chorale programs include two major free concerts each year, performances at retirement homes and sponsoring an annual Invitational Community Chorus Festival every spring.
