Logan Luke scored seven of her 21 points during a pivotal third quarter as Kalani overwhelmed Moanalua 66-49 on Thursday night in the championship game of the OIA Division II girls basketball playoffs at Waipahu.
Daesha Viela added 14 points, Kaylie Espinas tallied 10 and long-range sharpshooter Kirstin Kouchi had nine points on three treys for Kalani (9-3).
“I’m just so elated for the girls. They’ve been through a lot the last couple of years,” Lady Falcons coach Chi Mok said. “They promised themselves they’d fight to the end. In pregame, we didn’t talk about basketball. We talked about 32 minutes of heart.”
Moanalua played with heart, as well, crashing the boards early on and using its size advantage. Delylah Sanerivi had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Lei Talaro added 11 points, seven assists and three steals.
Kalani was outrebounded by the much taller Na Menehune 13-9 in the first half, but outboarded them 16-12 after halftime. Kalani also shot 13-for-15 at the free-throw line and Moanalua was 8-for-19.
Kalani executed smoothly most of the night against Moanalua’s zone and man defenses. Luke and Sydnee Kishaba shared the ball for give-and-go layups on backdoor cuts during a third-quarter 21-8 run to turn a three-point lead into a 56-40 lead early in the fourth quarter. Moanalua got no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Kalani’s fullcourt press was too much for Na Menehune (7-6), who finished with 22 turnovers. Kalani had just nine giveaways.
“We worked hard and it paid off in the end,” Kouchi said. “We’ve been working out and been playing together since last summer.”
In the first meeting between the teams on Dec. 20, Kalani was the home team and eked out a 58-53 win. This time, the Falcons had the stamina to close the game while Moanalua seemed to fade.
“This gym (at Waipahu), because of the length being 5 or 10 feet longer, we knew our strategy would be to keep their big girls running,” Mok said.
Moanalua’s Kylie Casinas and Kelcie Leong hustled for eight points apiece. Center Brittany Passi added six points and six rebounds. A key Na Menehune, Raven Rosa-Lasco, did not play.
Moanalua coach Tani Almont-Done’s squad had already qualified for the D-II state tournament, which begins next week.
The league crown is the first for Kalani since 2008, when George Weeks was head coach. The Falcons won D-II titles in ’05 and ’06 under Darold Imanaka.
