Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson to perform at Blaisdell
Brian Wilson, an original member of the Beach Boys and the songwriter and producer behind the group’s acclaimed 1966 album “Pet Sounds,” has extended his Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary World Tour to include a June 15 appearance at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.
Wilson will appear with guitarist Al Jardine, also an original member of the Beach Boys, and Blondie Chaplin, who played with the band from 1972 to 1973 and rejoined Wilson in the studio and on concert dates in 2013. The group will perform the songs from “Pet Sounds” in its entirety, including “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Sloop John B,” in addition to many more of the Beach Boys top hits and fan favorites spanning Wilson’s 54-year career with the band and as a solo artist.
Tickets, $49.50 to $134.50, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday for the June 15 concert, available at Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-745-3000, and in person at Blaisdell Center Box Office. Concert promoter Emporium is presenting the show.
The “Pet Sounds” album, widely acknowledged as a groundbreaking creative accomplishment in pop music, sounded unlike anything previously released in the genre, using layered recording techniques that paved the way for subsequent work by the Beatles and others. Last year, “Pet Sounds” marked its 50th anniversary.
The Honolulu appearance is part of a slate of new concert dates in North America and beyond for 2017, also billed as the Pet Sounds: The Final Performances tour.
“There were so many cities on this great tour that myself, my band, Al, and Blondie just couldn’t get to playing,” said Wilson in a news release. “We’re performing more shows than ever before and the fans keep asking for more. It’s been a real trip so far and I’m happy that we’ll have the chance to reach so many people that weren’t able to catch our shows this year.”

In 2016, Wilson and his band performed at 99 worldwide venues, according to his publicist. Last year, Wilson also released the book “I Am Brian Wilson: A Memoir,” co-authored by Ben Greenman.
In 2014, the biographical film “Love & Mercy” told the story of Wilson’s life in the ’60s and in the ’80s, with the younger Wilson portrayed by Paul Dano and the older Wilson portrayed by John Cusack. The movie dramatized Wilson’s “Pet Sounds” recording sessions, his subsequent struggle with mental illness, and his return to public life after separating from a controlling therapist.
