Five additional communities have been selected to become part of the Blue Zones Project in Hawaii.
The HMSA-sponsored health initiative, inspired by Dan Buettner’s book, “The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest,” added Central Maui, West Hawaii and three communities on Oahu to its program through a competitive selection process.
Kapolei and Ewa, Wahiawa, and the Manoa area encompassing Makiki, McCully and Moiliili are now part of the program. Central Maui includes Kahului and Wailuku.
The five new communities join Oahu’s windward side, East Hawaii and North Hawaii, which were selected in 2015.
A team of well-being consultants from HMSA’s partner, Healthways, and Blue Zones LLC will work with schools, restaurants and others in the communities to encourage habits that lead to a longer and better life, such as waking up with a sense of purpose, finding more ways to move, and eating a plant-based diet.
