A 29-year-old man driving a stolen pickup truck was fatally shot Friday by a police officer at a campground at Malaekahana, and police were looking for a male passenger who fled on foot.

The incident happened shortly before 4 p.m., when police received a report of a stolen Toyota Tacoma and found it at the campground, Assistant Police Chief Janet Crotteau said.

“In an attempt to flee, the vehicle driver struck the officer. The officer opened fire, striking the male driver multiple times,” she said.

Crotteau, who spoke at a news conference Friday night, said the police officer did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

She said the officer was treated and released from a hospital.

The driver, who was in critical condition when transported by emergency medical personnel, died at the hospital.

Crotteau said that following standard procedure in a shooting, an investigation into the case is being conducted, and the police officer was placed on administrative leave with pay. She said the police officer has been with the department for 17 years.

Crotteau said police officers are looking for the male passenger, described as in his late 20s, 170 to 180 pounds, with multiple tattoos on his chest and stomach. When last seen he was wearing dark shorts and no shirt.

She said the Toyota Tacoma was stolen Friday morning, and police received reports of seeing it at the campground.
