The jury in the high-profile Maui murder trial for a man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend returned a unanimous guilty verdict today.
Steven Capobianco was on trial for the killing of “Charli” Scott and setting her vehicle on fire in February 2014. Scott was 27-years-old and five months pregnant at the time with an unborn child fathered by Capobianco.
The jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and second-degree arson.
The verdict was announced after court reconvened this afternoon at 1:10 p.m., when the judge warned courtroom observers not to react with outbursts once the verdict was read.
Jurors had been deliberating since Dec. 1 following the conclusion of closing arguments from the state and defense, as well as a rebuttal argument from the prosecution.
The court received communication on the ninth day of deliberations indicating that the jury was “divided.” In a subsequent communication, the jury decided to deliberate further to “feel more confident in their own personal vote decision.”

The trial began more than six months ago with the state introducing 71 witnesses and entering hundreds of items into evidence.

The jury certain took a long time considering the evidence. I thank them for that. Circumstantial evidence? Yup. But that does not disqualify a trial or a verdict. The circumstances convicted him. He knows where the weapon is and other details he never confessed to.
Get a life.

Hope he gets what he deserves. Unfortunately we do not hang people anymore. Best way to execute someone. Very quick and nothing fancy needed except a properly

Nonsense, it’s perfectly easy and not a bit uncommon to botch a hanging. You gotta set the drop just right. It takes a trained technician to conduct a proper state-committed murder.
Hangings are not useful by coastal areas. All you need is a rope a cinder block and to throw some chum into the ocean. Drownings are quick and sharks get fed well so other swimmers by surrounding beaches are less likely to get bitten by hungry meal seeking sharks.

How much did this trial cost us tax payers? Some people think they can get away with anything. Murder 2 people, gosh!!!

Maui has changed a lot. Crime is rampant. No one is safe, not even a pregnant girl. And the Maui football coach, what happened to his case?
Yeah Maui has changed a lot but don’t let the headlines skew your perception of the island. Not sure about Maui but crime in general in Hawaii and throughout the US was a lot higher in the 1970s-1990s than it is now. I’d bet Maui is the same. This is based on the UCR (Uniform Crime Report) published annually by the FBI. So while you always need to be careful, don’t let a few cases in the headlines influence your perception of Maui. Maui is still a safe place overall when compared to the US as a whole.

As if the outcome was ever in doubt. This Capobianco character is a piece of work. What he did to his girlfriend and unborn baby is unspeakable. It’s said that the eyes are the windows to your soul. In his case, those empty eyes betray a soulless sociopath. He needs to be put away for life with no chance of parole for the good of society.
