The loss of hundreds of available beds because of privacy and bathroom issues (“Space rule would cut bed availability at homeless shelters,” Star-Advertiser, Nov. 21)?
Obviously lawmakers never spent a night on streets away from their bedrooms and bathrooms. Shelter, not privacy, is needed.
Gov. David Ige wants them to move along into permanent housing placement. Aren’t we lacking permanent housing? These are people, not cattle.

Political correctness should be relaxed
I believe we will see the pendulum swing more toward the middle regarding political correctness in the coming years. It can hardly swing further left.
I was appalled that a store would tell their employees to say, “Happy Holidays,” so as not to offend someone. They would then have a pre- or post-“Christmas” sale and not an “after holidays” sale. To me this was hypocritical.
I have close friends of all backgrounds and faiths and not one said they have ever been offended by being wished a Merry Christmas.
It appears now that many are looking to “find” things they can use for political correctness. This will further cause paranoid behavior. Some people are immediately assuming an offense and other people afraid to speak or act or they will be falsely labeled.
Dr. Phil said it best: “Get real.” Live aloha and be positive and not assume you’re always a victim.

Trump will preserve American liberties
I wake up daily thankful for a great society and opportunities for we the people. I relish saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America. I stand proudly for the “Star Spangled Banner.” Our freedom to do so is priceless.
By endorsing the Constitution, Donald Trump will preserve these liberties we value and that too many take for granted. In Hawaii, the dedicated 24/7 Team Trump — Gigi Jones (Team Trump state director), Al Frenzel and Kimo Sutton (co-chairs) — are to be commended for their fruitful efforts in helping elect our next president. They were instrumental in leading Trump volunteers to make phone calls to voters in battleground states that would ultimately have more influence on the election than a one-party state.
Now, I hope and pray, that we the people will give President- elect Trump the opportunity to prove his platform of making America great.

Cal Thomas distorts first lady’s comments
Add my voice to the others who want Cal Thomas’ column gone.
After reading his column about Michelle Obama’s TV appearance with Oprah Winfrey, I watched the entire interview; apparently Thomas did not (“Michelle Obama shows lack of humility, like her husband,” Star-Advertiser, Dec. 20).
Thomas said that “anyone who puts faith in a politician to make his or her life better is worshipping a false god,” and chided the Obamas for their pride. Thomas dwells on how much better a President Donald Trump will be, avoiding the fact that Michelle Obama affirmed over and over the need to give him just that chance.
The claim that the first lady said that “only her husband could provide hope” is inaccurate and beyond biased.
Thomas cites Scriptures in saying that pride goes before the fall. Who said that “I alone” can make America great?
