Gabby Lout’s interest in marine conservation was first inspired by French ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau when she was growing up in landlocked Arizona. It would lead her to college in Seattle and then to Hawaii, where she attends Hawaii Pacific University in pursuit of a master’s degree in sustainability with a focus on marine management.
Fashion-wise, the 24-year-old student and barista from Kailua manages to bridge the gap between mainland and island style, often mixing breezy tank tops with wool beanies and spring jackets. Lout’s No. 1 accessory is her skateboard, but here are the fashion items and accessories that come in a close second.
WORKING IT
“I wear long sleeves at work (at The Curb coffee shop in Kailua). My favorite is an off-the-shoulder sweater, jeans and sneakers. I need to be able to move. My favorite drink to make is pour-over coffee” — pouring hot water over ground coffee in a filter inside a drip cone over a cup.
ON CAMPUS
“Usually I keep it pretty casual. Jeans or a jean shirt, flip-flops. My favorite jeans are black with rips in them. I honestly probably wear them five days a week. The jeans are from Top Shop. Some days, I will wear my Vans sneakers.”
AFTER HOURS
“If I’m out with friends, I’m either at a dive bar or a club. For the dive-bar hangouts, I would wear a strappy tank top with jeans and gladiator sandals. For the club, I would wear a black crop top, black, high-waisted pants and ankle booties.”
ACCESSORY MVPS
“I wear hats — beanies and snapbacks — fairly often. I wear silver stud earrings every day. I also wear a lot of rings, and my shark-tooth necklace I wear every day. I found the tooth while diving.”
FAVORITE JACKET
“I have a light denim jean jacket that I love. I like to layer it with flannel. You can’t go wrong.”
