Hundreds of volunteers will be serving up Thanksgiving dinner today at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center to help the Salvation Army provide 2,000 people with hot meals.
The free event, formally the Mayor &Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner, runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the exhibition hall and is open to anyone in need of fellowship and a meal. The name reflects the city’s sponsorship and venue, which the city makes available every year.
The 46th annual Thanksgiving dinner will feature Billy V and live entertainment from hula halau, and the Salvation Army’s brass band and gospel choir.
“Everybody is welcome,” said Maj. John Chamness of the Salvation Army. “As long as we have food, we will continue feeding people.”
The bounty includes 900 pounds of turkey, 300 pounds of stuffing, 35 gallons of gravy, 350 pounds of rice, 30 pounds of coffee and 100 gallons of fruit punch. Chamness and Honolulu Fire Chief Manuel Neves will carve the turkey at about noon. Meal service will begin soon after.
The Salvation Army will also be serving Thanksgiving meals on the neighbor islands.
>> On Hawaii island, volunteers will be delivering more than 600 meals to low-income homes, senior citizen complexes and homeless individuals in Waikoloa, Waimea and Honokaa. Residents can also visit the Salvation Army’s Honokaa Corps for a hot meal today. In Hilo, there will be a Thanksgiving dinner for 500 people at Aunty Sally’s Hale from 10 a.m. to
1 p.m. today. Volunteers will also be delivering about
250 meals in the Hilo area. In Kona, a Thanksgiving dinner is expected to serve
1,000 residents at Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill from
10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
>> On Maui, a Thanksgiving lunch was held Wednesday at the Salvation Army’s Kahului Corps. In Lahaina, there are three Thanksgiving events, two of which were on Tuesday to serve hot meals to seniors and the homeless. The main event will be
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Hard Rock Cafe, with more than 300 people expected to attend.
>> On Kauai, a Thanksgiving lunch was held Wednesday at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue. More meals will be served at the Lihue Corps soup kitchen today. A Thanksgiving lunch on Wednesday was also held in Hanapepe for about 400 people.
The Hilton Hawaiian Village on Oahu will also be serving more than 400 Thanksgiving lunches at the Institute for Human Services from 2 to 4 p.m. today. The food includes 250 pounds of turkey, 11 gallons of gravy, 175 pounds each of stuffing and rice, and 60 pumpkin pies.
More than 50 local companies have donated food, decorations, flowers and other items for today’s Salvation Army dinner on Oahu. About 200 people also donated
250 pumpkin pies through the Buy-A-Pie program at Anna Miller’s and Zippy’s restaurants. The estimated 1,000 volunteers at today’s event come from civic clubs, schools, businesses and the military to help with decorations, food preparation, serving and cleanup.
Chamness of the Salvation Army said he encourages everyone in need of companionship or a hot meal to attend today’s event.
“One of the great things about this Thanksgiving dinner is it brings the community together,” he said. “It’s a really broad section of our community, from senior citizens to families to communities of people in need. It’s always been a festive mood.”
