“Moana’s” message of fearlessness in facing the unknown is not just for kids, and New York-based jewelry designer Alex Woo is celebrating Wednesday’s release of the Disney film with a limited-edition necklace inspired by the movie.
The voyaging canoe design pays homage to the title character, a Polynesian teenager who sets sail with the demigod Maui on a mission to save her people.
The necklace is available in sterling silver ($158) and 14K yellow gold ($678), online at AlexWoo.com and at Macy’s Ala Moana Center.

Make jewelry from Niihau shells at workshops
It’s not every day those of us on Oahu have access to Niihau shells, but Kai Hyde is making it possible for anyone to craft their own pieces during two Niihau shell jewelry workshops today at Na Mea Hawaii at Ward Warehouse.
The first two-hour session begins at 10 a.m., the second at noon. Email hookedgallery@me.com to reserve a space, but walk-ins are welcome.
Students will be able to use authentic Niihau shells in their creations and take their jewelry home with them.
The cost of the workshop is based on the quantity of shells required for the project, as follows:
>> Pendants: $24 to $36, or $150 each if incorporating ruby, Colombian emerald or sapphire.
>> Earrings: $48 to $60, or $300 per pair with ruby, sapphire or emerald.
>> Pikake-style bracelet: $102.

Event highlights local businesses
Those wishing to escape mall crowds on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, might want to head to Chinatown instead for the Downtown Shop Around, taking place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The event celebrates small local-owned restaurants and boutiques offering unique items. More than 20 restaurants will be participating, and 22 boutiques — including Echo & Atlas, Ginger 13, Hound & Quail, In4mation, Roberta Oaks and Sig on Smith — will be offering holiday gift items, discounts, trunk shows and refreshments.
Also among participants is the Aloha Shirt Shack by Jonathan Saupe and Bradley Rhea of Barrio Vintage, which shares the same address at 1161 Nuuanu Ave. The Aloha Shirt Shack will be featuring a 20 percent discount in-store and online at thealohashirtshack.com (promo code BlackFriday).
Barrio Vintage will be setting up $5 and $10 Black Friday bins of vintage finds.
